Josh Morningstar

Tulsa, OK, February 15, 2019- One of the greatest songwriters in the music business, Josh Morningstar, made a tour stop at Dead Armadillo Brewery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Morningstar released his EP, “The Plea” on Young Mary Records on December 14, 2018. In a year where many great albums were released, both big and small productions, “The Plea” ranks near the top of anything that was written, produced, and circulated throughout the folk, country, and blues scene.

Josh Morningstar is a genius. A songwriter and a storyteller that has had his share of demons to deal with in the past. Josh has conquered those demons, or at the very least, he has harnessed them and has learned how to use them for the sake of his music. It might even be fucking safe to say that he told those demons to go fuck themselves, so he be left alone to put his words about life and those experiences about the road on paper in the form of lyrics, stories, and eventually to the musical arrangements of how he perceives those songs to be. Not because somebody tells him that he should do it a certain way, but because Josh does it in the form that makes him who he is. A master at his craft and a legend in the making.

Before the release of “The Plea,” Morningstar was approached by country superstar Cody Jinks about the possibility of including a song on Jinks upcoming album “Lifers.” Josh did have just the song for Cody, called “Must Be the Whiskey” that was released as a single on June 15, ahead of the “Lifers” release date of July 27, 2018. The song was a hit, climbing the Texas charts all the way to number one and was named Rolling Stone’s “10 Best Country and Americana Songs of the Week” for the week of June 22, 2018. The song continues to be a major success for both Cody Jinks on the “Lifers” album and for Josh Morningstar on his EP, “The Plea.” Josh took the tune and made it into a completely different arrangement. The tune is a complete reconceptualization of a previously composed work. Morningstar used his genius and art to give an existing melody a musical variety. Thus, making “The Plea” and the tune “Must Be the Whiskey” his own.

“Josh Morningstar is a gentle soul, but he’s a fucking mad man.” The show at Dead Armadillo Brewery showed both sides of that statement. The storytelling, the songwriting, and the music is something that just cannot be ignored when Josh is anywhere close to your neck of the woods. No matter if it is a small venue where he is playing with legend Billy Don Burns or on a bigger stage with the likes of Canadian folk singer Colter Wall. Josh is one of the hardest working and most approachable musicians in the business today. Go see for yourself. Mad props to Indian Outlaw Promotions and Dead Armadillo Brewery for bringing Josh Morningstar to Tulsa.
