Review - Corduroy Brown: Doin' My Best

We, here at The Amp, have covered Corduroy Brown since his debut release Let Me Know in 2021. There’s an energy to the work with a bold mix of elements of Americana and pop music, encompassing lyrical content that swirls around themes of mental health, relationships, near death experiences and material that can cause music to be uncomfortably dark. With that introduction you may expect some dark gothic downtempo struggle music, but you won’t find much of that in the catalog. With the pain, distress, struggle that weave through the lyrics of the work, there’s electricity of hope that breathes life into the material. There’s always a reminder that you don’t win wars without scars, you don’t get better without work, and you don’t build character without obstacles.

The upcoming single “Doin’ My Best” highlights these themes, in a song that centers around giving yourself grace at the worst of times. With elements both musically and visually in the upcoming video release of Gospel music; there is a reminder that there’s a spiritual catharsis to be found in progress, not perfection. The reality is in these times, we all have to come to terms with the fact that we do not know what we’re doing, where we’re headed, how things will play out. All we can do in uncertain times is our best.

In an arena overcrowded with familiar voices, melodies, and everyone racing to the finish line of being the next someone, there’s a beautiful thing about seeing Appalachian artists who defy convention and fight for originality. If you don’t need another carbon copy and instead want to see what the originals look like, take some time to grab on to a feel good hit for the summer. If you have any appreciation for visual art, there’s an accompanying video and I don’t want to spoil anything, but if Corduroy had an Australian accent, he may be exiting his music career for a show wrangling crocs. If the song doesn’t keep a smile on your face, I can’t imagine you won’t crack at least a few smiles during the video.

“Doin’ My Best” will be available in audio form today, August 13th, at the places where you consume music. I can’t recommend enough to give it a listen, bring some joy into your life. The video will be available on YouTube on August 20th. Give it a listen, a watch, pour through the back catalog if you haven’t already listened. I genuinely believe Corduroy Brown may be one of the most underrated and original acts in Appalachian music. Don’t miss this.
