Premiere | David Quinn: I Just Want to Feel Alright
It’s always exciting to be able to premiere a new single from an artist and we’re thrilled to be able to offer readers the first listen of David Quinn’s new single, “I Just Want to Feel Alright.”
“This song is really about wanting to feel better. Sometimes I can get stuck in my head about past mistakes I've made and things in life that are tough to deal with. I have a hard time letting all of it go. I have always been affected by the weather - rainy days and dark nights - that's when I really start thinking about all of it - especially late nights. This song is about trying to move on, find some peace, and hoping I'll wake up in the morning with a clear head.
There is no specific or intentional influence on this one, but anytime I am writing a song like this, I am sure I draw from some of my favorite writers like Townes Van Zandt and Hayes Carll.”
Listening to the next few lines was like someone had peeked inside my head and knew how the last few years have felt for me. Honestly, I’m sure a lot of us could relate to these lyrics.
“I want to love without running away / I don’t want to feel so goddamn angry every day / I’m going to try to let it all go tonight / I just to want to feel alright”
It feels like this song could be the anthem for all of us overthinkers who can’t let go and can’t help but dwell on what we’ve done or could have done differently. In a world of superficial songs and overdone lyrics, David’s simple, but startling brand of songwriting is refreshing and relatable.
David’s brand of “Black Dirt Country” has been honed over the course of his two previous albums, Wanderin Fool and Letting Go. Like many others during the early days of the pandemic, David found he needed a change and left Chicago, his adopted home, and relocated to Indiana, where he found himself living in a cabin on a lake. It was there that his third album, Country Fresh, was born. Not content to just write the songs himself, Quinn also produced the album and hand-picked the studio musicians that would take this album to the next level. These include Laur Joamets (Drivin N Cryin) on slide guitar and solos, Micah Hulscher (Emmylou Harris) on piano, Fats Kaplin (John Prine) on fiddle, dobro, banjo and harmonica, Miles Miller (Sturgill Simpson) on drums, Jamie T. Davis (Margo Price) on guitar and Brett Resnick (Kacey Musgraves) on pedal steel. The album was engineered and mixed by Mike Stankiewicz (Willie Nelson, Shooter Jennings, Jason Isbell) and mastered by John Baldwin Mastering (The Rolling Stones, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristopherson).
