Juliet McConkey's latest single, “Horses Around” serves as a serene, yet powerful prelude to her much-anticipated sophomore album, Southern Front. The track beautifully captures her yearning for simplicity and authenticity in a world that often feels overwhelming and superficial.
From the very first chord "Horses Around" draws listeners into McConkey's peaceful vision of life. Her lyrics paint a picturesque scene: “Don’t need a boatload of paper money, just a warm bed and good fresh honey and a back porch to watch the sun go down and a few pretty horses around”. This imagery contrasts sharply with the hectic pace of modern culture, offering an alternative for those who find themselves weary of the stress that seems to follow us everywhere.
Last year seemed like a banner year for releases, but the buzz for 2020 albums, tours and festivals had everyone thrilled for what was to come. No one imagined that all of that would come to a screeching halt in Mid-March when a global pandemic struck. A devastating blow to the performing arts community among so many other small businesses, the education system and the healthcare community. Many musicians had just released or were nearing release dates for their music, but were left unable to tour in support of it. Some chose to delay their releases and others forged on and released albums, EPs and singles anyway. I have a great deal of respect for those that took a gamble and provided us with one of the most important things to help get us through this difficult period. The power of music has continued to bring us together when we can’t join each other like we normally would. Thankfully, social media has allowed the artists to perform livestreams or even just promote their art. It’s allowed the fans to share music and continue to discuss and analyze it. Here at the Amp, we’ve made our own individual lists of our favorite three albums this year to share with our readers. We hope that you’ve listened to some of these amazing artists and their albums, but if not, we hope that you’ll at least give them a listen and perhaps find some new favorites.
Now for those not familiar with Juliet and her work, she was born and raised in central Virginia, deep in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Juliet McConkey has always possessed a deep understanding of nature and interpersonal relationships that only comes from a rural upbringing. That is articulated sincerely and thoughtfully in her songwriting.
Since relocating to Texas in the summer of 2018 she has entered the regional scene with nothing short of a meteoric ascent. She was the winner of the Blue Light Singer/Songwriter Competition in 2018 (which took place at the legendary venue in Lubbock, Texas). This has garnered high praise and respect from her fellow musicians in the Texas music scene. Since then she has cut her teeth performing weekly residencies at storied Texas institutions such as Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos and Riley’s Tavern in New Braunfels.
