Premiere | J. Isaiah Evans and The Boss Tweed: Let’s Rock
Texas native J. Isaiah Evans, formerly of The 40 Acre Mule, is building up to a debut album release from his most recent project, J. Isaiah Evans and The Boss Tweed. Today, we are premiering the Roots Rock trio’s latest single “Let’s Rock.”
Out of curiosity, I asked J. Isaiah how he landed on the band name “The Boss Tweed.” As a self-proclaimed history nerd, he talked about how fascinating William “Boss” Tweed’s political career was in New York in the late 19th century. Although corrupt, Tweed was a powerful politician. Evans thought the name, “Boss” Tweed, was cool, tough, and conveyed the kind of power he wanted out of a band.
Evans was looking to form an organ-centric ensemble that followed in the revered footsteps of bands like Booker T. and the M.G.’s and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. He imagined a small group with a big band sound, and he cultivated just that with musicians Spud Crowley on drums and Matthew Vasquez on keys and organ. With the gritty, hard-driving groove and beats, Evans coined the trio as “Garageicana Rock-N-Roll.”
J. Isaiah Evans and The Boss Tweed have had an exciting year or so leading up to their forthcoming debut album. From playing sold out shows with fellow Texan Alejandro Escovedo and Dave Alvin with Jimmie Dale Gilmore, to official showcases at this year’s SXSW and AmericanaFest. When not performing with The Boss Tweed, J. Isaiah Evans can be found at a live show, cheering on his musical comrades from the crowd. He does well to talk them up to anyone who will listen and make social media posts promoting their shows and new music.
“Let’s Rock” is a let-loose-for-the-weekend anthem that I think we can all get behind. The single opens with a driving drum beat and organ groove. Evans comes out of the gate with all cylinders firing and the music reaches the crescendo to match before breaking it down and elevating again. It’s impossible not to dance to this song – the beat is infectious.
“Let’s Rock” will be streaming everywhere on Friday, September 20th, but you can watch and hear the new single here first:
