Premiere | Taylor Hunnicutt: All or Nothin'
You could call Taylor Hunnicutt Alabama’s Sweetheart, and for certain, you wouldn’t be wrong, but you’d be glossing over a woman who is also gritty, raw, fierce, and soulful. She might be sweet, but she’s the epitome of ‘fuck around and find out,’ and I don’t think you wanna.
A small-town, Southern Alabama native, Taylor has graced stages with artists and friends like Joshua Ray Walker, Mike and the Moonpies, Jaime Wyatt, Daniel Donato, Lilly Hiatt, Early James, 49 Winchester, Them Dirty Roses, and fellow Alabama artists Red Clay Strays.
With an album set for later this fall, Taylor and her band are poised to release a few singles in the lead up. The first of those is “All or Nothin,” a song that Taylor calls her personal “reconciliation wrapped up in a southern rock country tune,” for which she plays the same tambourine that was used on “Jessica” by The Allman Brothers Band.
It’s “ultimately a fuck you to all of the people in my life that made me choose. Made me choose sides, made me choose other people, and ultimately discouraged me from choosing myself…I become lighter and lighter every time I perform it. I release all of those people that didn’t think I could do it, that lied to me and gave up on me.”
Ain’t it hard to see me / Happier than ever / Finally runnin’ down a dream / You’re a friend of foul weather / Ain’t no clouds in my world now it seems
“All or Nothin” is a southern woman’s anthem for standing up for yourself, with an important acknowledgement that being a work in progress is okay, because that means you’re doing the hard work (and if you’re a woman in the music industry, count on your hard work being multitudes harder than the work of your male counterparts). Taylor also throws a quick nod to playing at Mercury Lounge Tulsa, one of the best small venues in the country, and a personal favorite, as a middle finger to the people who thought she wouldn’t make it.
Recorded at Clearwave Recording Studio in Decatur, Alabama, “All or Nothin” was engineered and mixed by the legendary Jeremy Stephens (Jason Isbell, Alabama Shakes, Billy Joe Shaver), and features Taylor Hunnicutt (vocals, acoustic guitar and percussion), Josh McKenzie (electric guitar), Tyler Treadwell (electric guitar), BB Palmer (bass guitar), and Andrew Mohney (drums).
