Premiere | Gregory Childs and Heart Lung: From the Chest
Today, we have the pleasure of premiering the latest single from Toronto-based independent alt-country group, Gregory Childs and Heart Lung. The single, “From the Chest,” arrives on the heels of their May release, “Lonesome,” and is carving a path of track releases leading to their upcoming full length album debut. They came on the scene with the EP, “Baby Blue,” in 2020, releasing a music video for the B side track, “Blood Ties.”
Childs brings a grungy, growly sound to the lead vocals which lends an edgier rock ‘n roll layer to the folk music framework. To counter balance that distinct sound, Gregory’s wife, Tyrah, also shares vocal duties with beautiful duets and background vocals. Tyrah is also credited with co-writing with Gregory; especially when he has hit a block and is having trouble flushing out a song. Childs finds songwriting influence from Elliott Smith, Willie Nelson, early Rod Stewart, Townes Van Zandt, Mary Gauthier, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Rounding out the rest of Heart Lung are Nick Cousins (lead guitar / pedal steel / harmonica), Brent Kervin (bass) and Zachary Moloci (vocals / drums).
“From the Chest” is what you likely think it is: an introspective look inside one’s self. Childs’ bright storytelling finds a man grappling with his faith after the loss of his wife. He pleads with God to take him into Heaven to be reunited with his wife even though he’s led a less than pristine life.
I sing this song just to ensure that at that Holy hour / You let me through your front gate / Though the devil may be sour / Cuz I may have promised him just a thing or two / But Lord, I swear / I’ll make it up to you
Although the subject matter is heavy and it’s ultimately a love song, the tune is an up-tempo romp that you’ll definitely find yourself dancing to.
From the looks of the videos from their live shows posted to social media, Gregory Childs and Heart Lung deliver a lively performance. And if you are in the Toronto area, you can catch their next live show on Saturday, October 22nd at Dakota Tavern. Otherwise, satisfy yourself with this first listen of “From the Chest” until they make it to your area.
