Chris Stewart: A Couple Extra Miles

For the last 12 years, Kansas City, KS, native Chris Stewart has been writing songs, but it took a few years before he found the gumption to play those songs for an audience. He started off like many musicians – singing in the church. Then he began playing with a few jam bands around the Kansas City metro area before graduating into playing solo shows where he performed his own work.

Chris is more of an impulsive songwriter; putting pen to paper when the moment sparks an idea rather than forcing the lyrics to be written. Therefore, his original material is all his own instead of collaborating with another artist to create his catalog. His ideas range from personal experience to thoughtful imagination. Fans of Chris Stewart have been anxiously awaiting recorded music from him. Many across the Midwest and Great Plains have been able to enjoy Stewart’s live performances at venues and at music festivals beyond. He’s shared stages with some of the most prevalent names in independent country and Americana music. Typically, you can experience his smooth and melodious voice in several regular gigs he plays around Kansas City.

Stewart’s writing style is heavily influenced by country music greats, Merle Haggard and Jamey Johnson. Similarly, he uses vivid imagery and a storytelling blueprint to bring his songs to life. Wanting to ruminate on a period of time in his life, Chris wrote the stand alone single, “A Couple Extra Miles,” one evening in about 20 minutes. The lyrics are personal and sentimental; easily reminiscent to any listener that has wanted to make an endearing moment last forever.

“She moved a little closer / So did I / And everything was fine / And we stepped outside beneath the stars / The beating of my lonely heart shot up to the moon / And that night kept going on and on and on / And ended way too soon”

Chris revealed that the song came to him effortlessly – the lyrics flowing freely as he recollected his memories. Chris shared that the song is a true story which took place just a few hours from his home. It quickly became a favorite and most requested by the audience that frequent his shows.

Chris is accompanied on pedal steel guitar by his longtime friend, Clint Stevenson. Clint can often be found performing with Chris as a duo. Stevenson is credited as the one to suggest putting “A Couple Extra Miles” out as a stand alone single rather than including it on Stewart’s upcoming full album. Realizing that this song was a different style than that of the forthcoming album tracks he had already chosen, Stewart agreed with Stevenson and we now have the release of “A Couple Extra Miles.”

Ahead of the Summer 2022 release of his eight track original album, you can now find the single “A Couple Extra Miles” available for download on your favorite digital platform.
