Premiere | Brandi Colt: Unbreak a Heart

Brandi Colt is getting after it again with her self-produced sophomore album, a follow-up to her Appalachian Hearts. The new album will, ultimately, be a double disk set. It will be aptly called Songs I Wrote and Some I Love Volumes 1 & 2.

The new album will come out as a set of four singles before the rest of Volume 1 will be released in February 2022. The first single will be “Unbreak a Heart,” produced by both Brandi Colt and Andrew Crawford. “Unbreak a Heart” is set to be released on December 30, 2021, with the following single “I Was Only Lonely with You” set to be released on January 20, 2022.

“Unbreak a Heart,” as Brandi describes it, was originally written as "the kind of advice I would give my son while he navigates his own experiences as he gets older." The song is filled with the kind of practical advice a parent gives their child. Some things are very specific, like, “You can send her those flowers before she ever says goodbye.” Some things are generally very practical and metaphorical, like, "You can't take back your stones after you throw them."

For me, the listener, the song is quite pensive and thought-provoking. It evoked a long list of lost memories and even stronger emotions that came with them, both good and bad - as accomplishments and regrets one accumulates throughout life. In this, the song has a universal appeal. The tone of the song has a slower pace. One might say that it is patient and maternal, as you’d expect considering where it comes from.

Assembled for this piece is an accomplished set of musicians for this project. Featured on this song are Brandi Colt on vocals and guitar, Andrew Crawford on guitar and mandolin, Pablo Trujillo from Micky and the Motorcars on pedal steel guitar, and Gary Wiley, formerly with Martina McBride, on bass. The song was produced by Brandi Colt and Andrew Crawford.
