Morgan Wade: "Stay" Single Release
Morgan Wade is one of the hardest working musicians I know, and I am so happy to see her growing success, because she has earned every bit of it. Before the live music industry was forced to temporarily shutter, she was recording her first full length LP with Sadler Vaden in Nashville. Recently, she had been touring with The Steel Woods, Ashley McBryde, and had scheduled dates with artists like Ian Noe, Amanda Shires and American Aquarium throughout April and May. As many independent artists are reimagining their spring tours and festival appearances, I’m thankful that Morgan has given us something wonderful to listen to while we wait.
She has had “Stay” in her head for a long time, and had played it only once live before recording it. She was inspired to write it from Johnny Cash’s, “I Walk the Line” and her opening lines make that direct association, “Ain’t a ring of fire baby, but for you I walk the line… a burning desire for what ain’t mine.” When I spoke with Morgan she said she wanted to tell the familiar story of someone reflecting on their relationship and thinking, “I would do all of this for you, but you just aren’t as into this as I am.” That’s clearly felt while she belts out with the rawest emotion, “I could love you in at least a hundred ways, so tell me, why I can’t stay.” It is honest and soul awakening.
“Stay” is a gem, and the first of four songs that will be released over the next few months from OurVinyl Sessions. Morgan recorded them simply with her guitar, a stool and a camera at their studio. When asked to select from her songs, she felt that what she chose all fit best being performed solo and acoustically. The series gave her the opportunity to bring four songs forward and be heard, however, contrary to what many are thinking, these are not songs from her highly anticipated upcoming album. In fact, they are very different, as Morgan recorded her new music with a full band, and the sound change will certainly reflect that both melodically, thematically and creatively. The production will depart from the amazing acoustic that we also love, and I cannot be more excited to hear what is next as she was backed by incredibly well-known and talented musicians: Sadler Vaden (guitar), Jimbo Hart (bass), Derry DeBorja (keys) and Fred Eltringham (drums). Until we have the opportunity to hear that prestigious collaboration, let’s all push play on “Stay” and stay tuned for more from her OurVinyl sessions.
