Seemingly out of the ether, singer-songwriter trio, My Sister, My Brother, appeared on the music scene. The group itself may be brand-new, but the artists bring with them impressive resumés. Most may be familiar with each of their individual projects: Peter Groenwald is a musician, producer, and one-half of the indie folk duo, Hush Kids; Sean McConnell has his own solo work, in addition to penning songs for many other luminaries such as, Meatloaf, Tim McGraw, and Little Big Town; Garrison Starr is a Grammy-nominated songwriter/producer, responsible for co-writing and producing stand-up comedian, Margaret Cho’s 2016 album, American Myth.

The trio were brought together for a songwriting retreat in the early summer of 2018. They met at Groenwald’s Nashville studio in an effort to write a song for a TV show trailer. The result of their day together is what lead to their first single, released this past Friday, January 10, “Nothing Without You.”

When speaking with Peter Groenwald recently, he passionately described it as the easiest of songwriting sessions any of them had ever been a part of. He talked about how the song just flowed out of them like they were all in each other’s thoughts of exactly what the song should be. The whole process was almost effortless. The trio of songwriters enjoyed the process so much, they agreed to continue their efforts at later dates. So, later that summer on a couple of separate occasions, they continued writing until they had the songs that now make up their debut self-titled album which is due to release on March 6, 2020. Groenwald depicted the album as a collection of “hymns,” so to speak, meant to be therapeutic to the human response to piloting difficult relationships and discovering the hope we have for ourselves and those we hold closest to our hearts. The stunning and powerful lyrics are met with even more stunning and powerful harmonies. The kind that are usually only found in siblings, which brings forth the name: My Sister, My Brother.

Sean McConnell is set to begin a solo headlining tour in the U.S. in January and a European tour in February. Garrison Starr will be opening those shows with a set of her solo work and then Sean will join her for a middle set featuring the work of My Sister, My Brother. According to Groenwald, he is projected to join the two on tour later in the year.

To kick off the Secondhand Solo Tour, McConnell and Starr will be first appearing at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From there, they will cut a path through Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, finishing that tour in Kansas City, Missouri, where Oklahoma Reviews’ own contributing photographer, Kaeleigh Williamson, will be covering the show. After a week-long break, they will head to the UK and Europe in February for the next leg of the tour. My Sister, My Brother’s second single, “Don’t Know How to Love You,” will release on February 7, the first day of the Europe tour, with the EP release on March 6.
