This was my first assignment for Oklahoma Reviews and I was very lucky that it was for a legendary film star from my childhood – The Lost Boys, and Jack Bauer in 24 along with many more TV shows and films. The one and only Kiefer Sutherland, country singer-songwriter, who was playing a sold-out show at Manchester!

I arrived at the venue earlier than required as I was not going to miss this! I joined other photographers to take my position in the pit, and chatted to a few front row die hard, excited fans. However, they must wait for their hero to appear, as first up was Twinnie. Having not heard much about Twinnie, apart from my DJ friend who introduced me to her music, I was unsure of what to expect. Fresh from a recent tour in Nashville, she returns back to the UK on the back of a major label deal and stand out artist at this year’s Country2Country Festival. She appeared on stage to warm applause from the crowd. Bursting with high energy and enthusiasm, Twinnie set off with her amazing country western style vocals. Blasting out her songs such as the latest “Social Babies,” and a few from her 2019 EP, Better When I’m Drunk, as well as a great cover of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Twinnie had a little chat in between songs, raising some laughs, and making this a memorable gig for old and new fans.

Sporting a large cowboy hat and white tux jacket, Kiefer Sutherland took the stage to a raucous applause. It is surreal, to say the least. Kicking off the evening with “Rebel Wind” and “Can’t Stay Away,” the actor’s signature smoky vocals were a perfect match. Kiefer proved to be a great entertainer, dancing and jumping from two steps at the back of the stage, which made quite a spectacle for the excited fans.

Playing a solid list of tracks that heavily leaned on his latest album, Reckless & Me,” he included “Something You Love,” and the album title track, “Reckless & Me,” in his set. The actor paid homage to musical icons who have shaped his style, and mentioned Johnny Cash and played “Shirley Jean” in tribute to the singer. The set also included cover versions from Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee” and Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” which was a tribute to his childhood spent with his Dad. Kiefer had the crowd rocking out with him and the band all night long.

The Canadian born, American film star, is a natural performer, making fans laugh with warm self-deprecating anecdotes on his personal life. Most of his songs have meaning behind them; the most touching account of his Mom was told through the song “Saskatchewan,” a very heartfelt story. Despite his fame, the actor is a humble and gracious performer, thanking fans continually. The show was energetic with Sutherland’s dancing, and he was backed by his excellent five-piece band. This was certainly a night to remember.

The encore started with a crowd eruption to the band re-appearing on stage, and Kiefer performed “Calling Out Your Name,” a beautiful atmospheric duet with Twinnie. The show ended with the explosive “Agave,” which is my personal favorite and a perfect ending to an amazing performance. There are still a few dates left to see Kiefer, and he is back early next year again. I recommend catching this tour!
